Message from the Board – Jack Csernecky, Acting President

POA BOARD UPDATE

There has been a great deal of turmoil at the CSPOA office since April that has affected operations for all of us. Some of what has transpired is as follows:

·        Since April, our board president, Joe Watts, has been unable to be present because of medical reasons.

·        In mid-June, we were informed that our ACC Chairman, Joe Rochel, had suffered a stroke and was not available.

·        My wife had suffered an injury in California while visiting our grandchildren, which caused hospitalization; thereby, curtailing my presence at the office.

·        At the July POA board meeting, the board accepted Joe Watts’ (our President) resignation.

·        The board is being sued by a contractor because the contractor did not meet our construction criteria and we stopped construction. The papers were filed in May and responded to promptly. Further action remained dormant until a request this month from the contractor’s attorney to supply further background information.

All the above have created multiple items for the office and board to respond to, which are as follows:

A.    A blast email was sent out asking for an individual to fill the opening for the ACC Chairman; only one response has been received.

B.     The board is now functioning as a six-member board with myself as Acting President. One of our board members has suggested someone to fill the opening, which we are evaluating.

C.     The group of volunteers has been reduced because of physical and/or medical issues, which have affected the ACC’s response to requests from homeowners.

As the Acting President, I apologize for any delays and/or responses from the office. We need your help filling the open positions and patience with our responses/call backs to your requests.

THANK YOU TO OUR BULLETIN EDITORS LINDA RUGG and MERRILEE BURNS

Recreation Committee – Mary Ann Williams

Labor Day Weekend Picnic

A group of people sitting at a picnic table

Description automatically generatedSince the Carolina Shores POA Memorial Day Weekend Picnic was cancelled due to the rainy weather, it has been rescheduled for Sunday, September 3 (Labor Day Weekend). Tickets will be distributed by members of the Recreation Committee at the POA clubhouse (not the office) from Monday, August 7, through Thursday, August 10, and again the following week from Monday, August 14, though Thursday, August 17.  Saturday, August 12, will be an additional distribution day for those who work. Distribution times will be from 10:00 a.m. until noon.  Due to parking constraints, there is a limit of 325 tickets, so get yours early - first come, first served!  (No tickets will be issued after the deadline, and no one will be admitted without a ticket.)  Tickets are complimentary to POA residents only.  Due to the continued growth of our neighborhood, we will not be able to accommodate outside guests at this event.

This year’s menu will consist of pork bar-b-q, chicken tenders, coleslaw, baked beans, rolls, sweet and unsweet tea, and water - all catered by Smithfield’s Chicken ‘N Bar-B-Q of Shallotte.  Bring any other beverage and sweet dessert that you might want for yourself. (There will not be a dessert sharing table this year.) The time will be from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. at the POA pavilion and picnic grounds by the pool. Food will be served from 2:30 p.m. until 3:30 p.m.

Also, as a friendly but important reminder, if you pick up tickets and subsequently find that you are unable to attend, PLEASE return them to the POA office or call to cancel by August 21.  In order to continue providing our residents with this event, paid for with recreation funds, it is important that we only be charged for meals contracted with the caterer.  After the final count is given, we are obliged to pay that amount.  It is in all our interests not to pay for “no shows”.

Come join us for this fun, community-wide event!

Music Bingo at the POA Clubhouse

Description automatically generated

This is a new event that will be happening at the POA Clubhouse on Sunday, August 13, starting at 2:00 p.m.  Music Bingo is a fun and exciting take on the classic game of bingo but instead of numbers being called, songs are played.  If you have that song on your card, you mark it off.  The Bingo will be run by T&J Entertainment who host Music Bingo at many venues in our area.  There is no charge for bingo cards for this event. Just bring your music knowledge, BYOB, and any snack to share.

Happy Hour in the Park

“Happy Hour in the Park” for the month of August will be held Friday, August 18, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the POA pavilion by the pool. August’s theme will be “Back to the 60’s”. Think tie dye, flower power, headbands, beads, peace symbols, and even bell bottoms! This fun, informal event happens on the third Friday of the month, weather permitting.

BYOB and any snacks or food items to share and enjoy an early evening get-together. It was wonderful to meet so many new neighbors at July’s Happy Hour in the Park and, despite the heat, there was a breeze under the cooling fans of the pavilion! There are no organized plans, just a great opportunity for conversation and camaraderie.

Book Discussion Group – Susie Riggs

stack of books isolated on white background

The Book Group met on Friday, July 21. We discussed two books, both of which were about women who had a profound influence upon American life. The Doctors Blackwell by Janice Nimura is a biography of Elizabeth Blackwell, the first woman medical doctor in the United States and her sister Emily, who also became an M.D. The Magnificent Lives of Marjorie Post by Allison Pataki is an historical novel about Marjorie Merriweather Post, the businesswoman, socialite, and philanthropist whose father C.W. Post founded the Post Cereal Company. Both books were highly informative and enlightening.

Our next meeting will take place on Friday, August 18, at 10:00 a.m. in the large room of the POA clubhouse. We will be discussing The Lincoln Highway by Amor Towles.

I would like to update this list. As of now, there are 59 people who had let me know they would be available to help with neighbors’ needs at times. I get few responses, mostly from the same 3-4 people. So, if you no longer wish to be on this list, please text me at 910-368-1070 or email me at dfp324@atmc.net

If you would like to stay on this list and would prefer to get notifications by email instead of through Nextdoor, please email me at dfp324@atmc.net and I will send out a group email when someone needs help in our community.

If you need help, please continue to let me know by calling the above number or my home at 910-575-6243.

We have many volunteers on the Care Team, ready and willing to help our neighbors with temporary assistance. I will do whatever I can to find someone to help - all you need to do is call or email me!
